Description:

A FINE FRENCH ART NOUVEAU SILVERED BRONZE TABLE MIRROR DESIGNED BY LOUIS MAJORELLE
Saglier Frères, Paris, circa 1900

Of shaped rectangular outline, the original bevelled plate within a sinuous moulded frame decorated with finely cast flowers and leaves, resting on a decoratively shaped folding stand to the back, Victor Saglier's mark impressed to the base of the frame
60cm high, 44.5cm wide

LITERATURE:
R. Bouvier et al, Majorelle – Un Art de Vivre Moderne (2009), p. 198, pl. 122

OTHER NOTES:
This mirror was offered in Majorelle Frères catalogues in the years immediately after 1900, featuring prominently at the centre of the spread illustrating their range of silver plate.

  • Condition: For the most part the frame is in very good condition consistent with use, showing no more than light wear, but to its crest there is a deep nick the edge of the leaf above left of the central flower, leaving a small piece of metal raised out of alignment, while the wear to the lower part of the frame and its feet is a little more pronounced, with various small bumps, nicks, and scratches.

There are about six or seven scattered small spots of oxidisation to the silvering of the plate, the largest being a pair upper centre which appear to correspond with the positions of two of the rivets securing the stand to the backboard. The plate is otherwise well preserved.

The walnut-veneered plywood backboard, which appears to be original, has a few veneer losses around its edges, while three of its retaining screws are lacking including the two to its base; the backboard is a little loose as a consequence. The steel stand is oxidised to its surface and its riveted mount to the backboard is loose.

(The backboard has not been removed in inspecting the frame or plate.)
