Overall 123cm high, 71cm wide, 44cm deep

PROVENANCE:
John D. Dunn Antiques, Melbourne

  • Condition: The top of the cabinet shows the greatest wear, including numerous retouched light superficial losses to the black ground, an old gouge across the centre, and other scattered knocks, dents, and points of heavier wear, particularly around the edges. The wear to the front is similar to that to top but to a lesser degree, and that to the sides lesser again. The brass mounts generally show typical light dents, wear, and oxidisation, and points at the lower part of each half of the door escutcheon have been lost.

The decoration to the interior is generally very well preserved, but with wear to the gilding to the front edges of the carcase and drawer dividers. The drawers project forward of the dividers, presumably caused by shrinkage in the latter. The pull to the lower right drawer has worn out of the drawer front but is present (with a broken shank).

The locks to the doors and to the lower central drawer both operate, albeit with a bit of fiddling necessary to align parts. The key for the door lock may be original; its bow is bent out of alignment. The key for the drawer lock is relatively recent.

The stand is generally in very good condition consistent with age and use.
