Description:

A GEORGE II GILT-FRAMED PIER MIRROR IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM KENT
Circa 1740

The rectangular plate within a moulded cassetta type frame with sanded plate surmounted with a pediment enclosing an armorial escutcheon between scrolling foliage and flowers
149cm high, 73cm wide, 10cm deep

PROVENANCE:
L.J. Cook & Co., Melbourne, from whom purchased by the vendor, December 2002 ($35,000)

  • Condition: The mouldings throughout and the applied decoration within the pediment are intact excepting one or two slight very losses and occasional scattered fractures in the latter, which are stable. The attachment of the floral and foliate scrolls to each side of the pediment has been reinforced with modern brads (about three or four each side) the exposed heads of which are visible at close inspection.

The surfaces and gilding of the mouldings and applied decoration appear to be largely original but with age-related wear throughout, especially to edges and other high points, and many small losses of surface gesso (and thus gilding), most of these losses having been partially disguised with gold paint.

It seems likely that the sanded ground of the pediment and plate of the frame has been entirely or largely regilded. Disturbances to the sanded ground of the pediment (losses, lifting, and cracking), most extensively below the floral and foliate scrolls, have been gilded over and / or covered with gold paint without proper attention to the underlying faults which remain obvious.

The outer faces of the frame and upper side of the pediment have been painted dark brown / black.

The plate (the reverse of which has not been inspected) appears to be a nineteenth century replacement, its pine retaining boards likewise. There is a horizontal band of small losses to its silvering about mid-height and another smaller band lower right, together with more minor age-related degradation to the silvering scattered throughout.
