Description:

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY EXTENDING DINING TABLE
Thomas Barrett, London, circa 1800

The pair of half-round end sections raised on tapering square supports with brass caps and casters, accompanied by three leaves (two later), the underside of the top of each end signed in ink 'Made by Thomas Barrett / 53 Wardour Street Soho London'

Small leaf in DA storage - JF
72cm high, 255cm long (with all leaves fitted), 122cm wide (the ends together without leaves forming a circular table of 122cm diameter)

OTHER NOTES:
Thomas Barrett was a relative, probably a son, of John Barrett, a furniture maker and warehouse owner recorded working at 53–54 Wardour Street, Soho, from 1789 to 1825.

  • Condition: In very good condition consistent with age, use, and previous restoration.

As noted in the catalogue description, two of the three spare leaves are later additions, apparently adapted from leaves originally part of a later nineteenth century table. Allowing for minor variation, they are quite well matched in colour with the original parts of the table.

There are three old shrinkage cracks to the top of the table extending from its edges at various points: one to each of the ends (both of these about 22cm in length) and one to the original spare leaf (about 58cm). All of these are closed and stable, having been glued and filled, the longest secured with a pair of small battens underside.

The additional leaves are secured in place with brass forks of the usual type for such tables (although the table is accompanied by sufficient forks for only two leaves). If two or more leaves are fitted, they require support to the underside to avoid sagging. To achieve this, a pair of recesses have been cut into the rear / inner frieze rails of the end sections of the table to accommodate battens reaching from to the other as bearers to support the spare leaves in between. (A pair of recent pine battens for this purpose accompanies the table but are long enough to support two leaves.)
