Description:

A JAPANESE BRONZE AND MIXED METAL DISH
Kuroya Tsujiro, Meiji Period, last quarter 19th century

An unusual, possibly ceremonial dish on integral stand, the well of the dish with a design of a gnarled branch with fruit and leaves in applied metal and various coloured stones, its gilt and inlaid silver rim of scrolling grasses and stylised dragons, the elaborate bronze and mixed metal stand with a frieze of repeating cloud design in bright gilding, inlaid floral motifs, stylised dragons and flaming pearl (tama) raised on six supports in the form of elephant heads, their long trunks extending as feet to the foot-ring, the underside of the dish engraved in Japanese 'Manufactured in Great Japan in the Chinese style by Kuroya Tsujiro'
25cm high, 33.5cm diameter

OTHER NOTES:
Kuroya Tsujiro is recorded as an accomplished Meiji Period metal-worker whose work was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878.

  • Condition: Generally in very good condition.

One of the applied stone fruit to the well of the dish is lacking; those remaining are lightly scratched and scuffed.

Most of the object retains a patina of light superficial oxidization, generally uniform but mottled with some localised variations in colour, but this patina has been cleaned off two adjacent parts of the frieze of the stand, exposing the natural colours of the various metals.
