Description:

A PAIR OF ANTIQUE ITALIAN MAJOLICA VASES IN RENAISSANCE MANNER
Late 19th / early 20th century

Each of baluster shape with a pair of scrolling handles between the shoulder and the everted mouth modelled as twinned serpents with a grotesque mask at the base, each with its original separate low plinth, decorated in sixteenth century 'istoriato' manner with Classical mythological scenes to the front and reverse
Each 79cm high, including plinth

PROVENANCE:
Purchased from Antique Décor (Gary Kay), Melbourne, 1985

  • Condition: First vase: Inspection under UV light indicates a neat and inconspicuously repaired break to the top and base of one handle, a repair to (or rejoining of) the connection between the body and foot, and that the foot has been previously broken and repaired, the repairs being generally well executed and not apparent at normal viewing. The raised band to the lower part of the body (below the main decoration) has lost its decorated surface to about a quarter of its length and there are other more typical lesser points of wear, such as small surface losses to the high points of the masks at the base of the handles. There are a few very fine cracks in the decoration to the body but these appear to be in the decoration only, rather than deeper hairline cracks. There are drip marks running downwards at points within the main decoration but, as these are beneath the glaze, they are presumed to be original, the result of carelessness in manufacture.

Second vase: The connection between the body and foot is a little loose (not cemented) allowing the body to wobble on the foot (but remaining stable). Inspection under UV light reveals extensive restoration to the mouth and both handles and masks, and that the foot has been previously broken and repaired. A roughly oval area of decoration (about 3 x 4cm) has flaked away from the lower part of the body. There are fine cracks to the decoration of the type noted above regarding the first vase but more extensively on this second vase; also as on the first vase, this one has drip marks in its decoration.

One of the bases has a well-executed repair about 9cm long to its foot (revealed under UV light) and there are a couple of minor chips to their upper edges but these are otherwise in good condition.
