Description:

A VICTORIAN FIGURED WALNUT AND INLAID BOOK-CASE CABINET
1880s

The upper part with a moulded cornice and frieze above a pair of glazed doors, the projecting lower part with a pair of frieze drawers above a pair of panelled cupboard doors flanked by half-columns, on a plinth base with flattened bun feet, the front in highly figured walnut and inlaid with floral designs in box and other woods to the centres and corners
216cm high, 125cm wide, 46cm deep

  • Condition: The bookcase has previously been restored and repolished, probably thirty or more years ago, and remains largely in good condition but with some subsequent faults, together with occasional superficial scuffs and wear, mostly around the base of the lower part.

On the upper part, both mitre joints in the cornice have separated a little and to the side sections of the frieze below the cornice there are cracks and small losses in the veneer caused by shrinkage in the substrate beneath. There is a gap between the meeting edges of the glazed doors; the half-round moulding at this same edge has been rather crudely nailed back in place; and there is a somewhat conspicuous filled hole below the keyhole of the right-hand glazed door. The interior of the upper part has been fitted with modern metal L brackets to support shelves but no shelves are present for the upper part.

On the lower part, lengths of the applied reel moulding are lacking from both side sections of the frieze. The left-hand drawer is lacking its brass keyhole insert and the keyhole has been enlarged with wear. Shrinkage in the left-hand door panel has exposed the darker (unfaded) edge of the panel. There is a gap between the meeting edges of the doors and the half-round moulding at this edge has been nailed back in place.

The right-hand door of the lower part lacks its lock; the upper part and drawers retain their locks but no key is present for these.
