AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE TREFOIL OINOCHOE
Circa late 6th century BC

Baluster form, with everted rim, and high concave handle, the frontal panel painted with a wedding procession, the couple riding in a quadriga and attended by Dionysos, Apollo, and a goddess wearing a polos, a small bird standing on a branch at lower right, the details in red and traces of white, on a spreading foot,
25cm high, 14cm at the widest point

LITERATURE:
J. D. Beazley, Paralipomena, Additions to Attic Black-figure Vase Painters, and to Attic Red-Figure Vase Painters, Oxford, 1971, p 182 (near the Altenberg Class)

  • Condition: Multiple area of restoration and associated cracks/hairline cracks overall, most notably to the body, foot, neck, spout and handle including segments of retouching and some filling, with minor obscuring to the decoration (one horse's ears, mane, bridle and part of the tail, another horse's muzzle, part of one figure's chin and upper body and one wheel).
    The handle showing four repairs and partial restoration of the back of the neck and top of the handle. This area also presenting small area of loss.
    The majority of the foot and front section of the neck and spout in tact.
    Wear and loss of black glaze in places
