Description:

AN AUSTRALIAN NATIVES' ASSOCIATION 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA' BLACKWOOD ELBOW CHAIR
1890s, formerly of the Ballarat East Branch of the A.N.A.

Of large upright form typical of ceremonial chairs of the period with a high padded back with turned supports above the padded arms and upholstered seat, the moulded crest carved in relief with a prototype Australian coat of arms of a crossed shield with emu and kangaroo supporters against eucalyptus leaves and nuts above a frieze lettered in gold 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA / BALLARAT EAST BRANCH No. 50 A.N.A.'
151cm high, 61cm wide, 60cm deep

  • Condition: There are minor shrinkage gaps at a few joints but all joints are tight and firm, with no movement, and the frame is structurally sound throughout. There is a large chip loss to the rear side of the rear left foot. It appears the front feet may originally have been longer and without casters and were, at an early stage, shortened to accommodate the casters. Generally the frame otherwise shows only light wear.

The crest is removable, resting in place with dowels to its underside fitting into holes along the toprail. One dowel is broken off another has been repaired but the crest rests securely in place. For reasons not apparent the extremities of the toes of the emu on the crest have been chipped away, with associated superficial disturbance to the base of the crest immediately surrounding this.

The (probably original) leather covering to the back and the padded armrests is distressed and torn, with large losses to the armrests. The covering to the seat, which appears to be leather, is a replacement and in good condition. The simulated leather fabric covering to the rear side of the back is torn down one side and worn generally.
