Description:

Follower of John GLOVER (1767–1849) Second quarter 19th century
An English wooded landscape with figures and cattle crossing a river
Oil on canvas
Unsigned
86 x 125cm

  • Dimensions: 86 x 125cm
  • Medium: Oil on canvas
  • Condition: The work generally presents well, evidently having had some conservation treatment at some point in recent decades, including relining of the canvas and presumably cleaning. Examination under UV light reveals in-painting of old shrinkage cracks in the paint surface, mostly across the lower third of the work. Most of this retouching remains intact and not apparent at normal viewing, especially in darker passages, but it appears to have become thin in certain areas, exposing again the shrinkage cracks beneath, most obviously in the area of water above the centre of the clapper bridge and, to a lesser degree, to the right of this, just above the trailing cows in the main group of cows.

There is a vertical scratch lower centre (directly above the word 'morn' in the title plate on the frame) and a horizontal scratch above this (above the rump of the rear-most dark cow).

There is a light craquelure across the upper two-thirds of the work but fewer points of retouching in this area.
