Description:

Frederick WOODHOUSE, Jnr (1847–1927)
A bay hunter in a landscape
Oil on canvas

Signed and dated lower right: Fred Woodhouse / 1902
49.5 x 67cm

  • Dimensions: 49.5 x 67cm
  • Medium: Oil on canvas
  • Condition: The painting generally presents well at normal viewing but viewing under UV light reveals substantial repainting all around the outer parts of the work, including of the landscape features to each side, together with more localised retouching to the head and forequarters of the horse. The signature and date fall within a repainted area and must therefore be later but there appear to be traces of another signature beneath this, suggesting the present signature and date strengthens and / or replaces an original signature.

The retouching to the horse is visible under raking light as slight variations in the paint surface but not otherwise obvious at normal viewing. Across the lower half of the work, in the area not repainted, there is a consistent pattern of tiny surface losses to the paint layer, quite apparent at close viewing but not at more usual viewing distance.

The frame is roughly contemporary with the painting and may be original to it but has been repainted in gold at some point. Apart from occasional superficial blemishes and some surface dirt and oxidization, it presents well.
