James Peele (1847-1905) was active during the late 19th century in both Australia and New Zealand. He frequently painted in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, and his landscapes often included people. This depicts Bayswater Creek (more probably Dandenong Creek, at Bayswater) with a figure, along a forest track. This area is now housing and part of Melbourne's extensive eastern suburbs.
