Description:

OXLEY, John, JOURNALS OF TWO EXPEDITIONS INTO THE INTERIOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES …
London, 1820

John Oxley, Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, undertaken by Order of the British Government in the years 1817–18 (John Murray, London, 1820)

Quarto, with section titles, one folding engraved plate, five aquatint plates (two hand-coloured), three folding charts, and two folding tables, in nineteenth century half calf with morocco boards and gilt-lettered spine

  • Condition: Apparently rebound in the nineteenth century, preserving what appears to be the original spine, which is very worn, abraded and with surface losses. Both joints between the spine and boards are worn, exposing the cloth hinges; the corners of the boards are bumped and worn. Internally, both hinges are partly cracked, with consequent splits and wear to the marbled endpapers.

Subject to the following points, the text block is generally clean with only occasional light spots and marks. The title is a little dirty generally with handling wear around its edges, and has a stain almost the full length of its left edge. Most of the folding charts, tables, and plate, which are all linen-backed, are a little discoloured and spotted with foxing, the first chart also somewhat dirty in places, some also with wear along their creases and edges, some edges also creased. Pressure from the thickness of the folding leaves has left linear impressions on adjacent leaves matching the edges of the folded leaves.

The aquatint plates are generally clean with but with some light offsetting from facing text leaves (and vice versa), more pronounced on the second colour plate (the portrait of the 'native chief'). The plate of 'Arbuthnot's Range' is marked with streaks of some unidentified dry black material rubbed across the lower left and right of the image.
