Description:

Paul THOMAS (1868–1910)
A colonnaded hall in a European palace
Oil on canvas
Remains of original labels to the reverse
64.5 x 52cm

PROVENANCE:
Sotheby's, Fine Decorative Arts and Jewellery, Melbourne, 26 May 2009, lot 419

  • Provenance: Sotheby's, Fine Decorative Arts and Jewellery, Melbourne, 26 May 2009, lot 419
  • Dimensions: 64.5 x 52cm
  • Medium: Oil on canvas
  • Condition: The painting presents very well. There are small areas of fine shrinkage cracking towards the lower right corner (as visible in the catalogue photos), the paint layer otherwise well preserved. Examination under UV light indicates no later painting.

The reverse of the canvas has not been inspected in full (to avoid dislodging the old cardboard backboards which bear remnants of early labels) but what is visible of the canvas through gaps between the boards reveals nothing untoward.

The sixteenth century-style gilt frame is of some age (nineteenth century, or possibly earlier) and is generally in good condition with typical wear, more pronounced around its outer edges.
